A cabin in the mountains, a long winter approaching, and no power line for miles.

Play Solar Simulator and learn how to survive off-grid by building your own system. When the the sun goes down, find out if you harvested enough sun to last the cold night.

Build it in the game. Simulate it. Then take the wiring diagram and build it for real.

Survival drops you at the cabin with a woodstove, a pantry that will not last, and not much money. The days are short and getting shorter.

• Stay warm. Keep the fire fed. The cold gets in fast after dark.
• Size an array the winter sun can charge. Short days, snow on the panels, storms that last for days.
• Earn your parts. Take ring orders over the radio, make them at the workbench, and order equipment by mail. It comes up on the truck once the plow clears the road.
• Get by. Cook, hunt, keep clean, and keep the generator fuelled for the bad weeks.

Sandbox is summer: perfect light, no wallet, just a running project cost. Pick a site, a log cabin, a cargo van or a food truck on a city street, and design a system for it.

• Set the conditions. Temperatures, cloud, an irradiance slider with real places to compare against, and how many days to simulate.
• Declare the loads. Pick appliances and how long they run, with typical hours suggested.
• Quick Build places an array and wires it for you. Hands-On has you set every pier, rail and junction box, then string the modules yourself.
• Real world components and specs. A catalogue of panels, batteries, inverters, breakers and boxes from manufacturers.
• Code built in. NEC checks for overcurrent protection, grounding, conduit and NEMA-rated enclosures, so a build that works is also a build that passes.

In Hands-On, every conductor is one you ran: through conduit, round the bends, onto the terminals on a wiring board drawn face-on and to scale.

The game then draws a wiring diagram from what you actually built: every breaker, fuse and ground, on a sheet you can tidy up and export as a PDF. Take it with you when you build it for real, and have a licensed electrician check your work.
